Alhaji Dr. Bamanga Tukur An History Maker

This is the profile of a great personality in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a leader par excellence, a wonderful achiever. A man whose contributions to the stability, greatness and advancement of our national course is very outstanding, a nation builder, a history maker, a go-getter, a business mogul, a politician, an elder statesman, an entrepreneur, Ambassador, a former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, a one-time Governor of the then Gongola State, a high profile civil servant, former Military Officer, Foremost African businessman and a founding member of the people’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Birth

Born in 1935 in Jada, Adamawa State; started his education at Bauchi Secondary School and attended Ahmadu Bello University of Zaria: known then as the largest University in Nigeria and second largest in Africa.

Career

The African private sector legend came to national attention in the mid-1970s, as the General Manager of the Nigeria Ports Authority, at a time the agency was having problems with congestion, as a result of massive cement importation scheme by the Yakubu Gowon Administration. During his Tenure, the government built a few seaports to ease the transaction cost associated with shipping and to ensure adequate facilities for Nigeria’s import and export needs.

In Murtala – Obasanjo government, the marine transport magnate built all the ports complexes in Nigeria. He built the Wharf extension, the container terminal, the Tin Can Island, Warri, Sapele, Calabar, and Onne Ports; improved ports authority by about 500 percent when he was in office.

In 1982, he left his position as General Manager and contested the Gongola gubernatorial race, which he won and served as governor for three months before the democratic administration distortion by a military coup. After leaving the Gongola State House, he entered full scale entrepreneurship, and was the founder and chairman of BHI Holdings Limited (DADDO Group of Companies), Chairman Afripractice Group and Executive President of African Business Roundtable.

National Appointments in Nigeria

The 77- year old technocrat and business tycoon has held numerous national appointments in Nigeria, including the directorship of the Nigeria Railway Corporation, the Nigerian National Shipping Line, Nigeria Airways, Central Water Transportation Company and the Board of customs and Excise. He is a member of the international Business Advisory Council (IBAC) of UNIDO and a member of the OECD Africa Investment Advisory Board. He was elected Chairman of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD) Business Group in Monterrey, Mexico in March 2002. In the same year he was conferred with the National Honour of the Commander of the Order of the Mono (COM) by the President of Togo, His Excellency, President Gnassingbe Eyadema, in recognition of his contribution to business in Africa. He was also appointed to the Ghana Investors Advisory Council by His Excellency, President John Agyekum Kuffuor in June 2002. In December 2003, he was conferred with the National Honour of the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) by his Excellency, President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria.

International Representation

As chairman of the NEPAD Business Group and Africa Business Round Table, he represents the continent’s business at the United Nations, African Union, ECOWAS and the G-8, all of which are geared towards good corporate governance for Africa. A man of remarkable intellect, A living legend, An icon, A symbol of Africa’s greatness, A father, A Role Model to many, A leader Extra-ordinary, A strict Disciplinarian, An Encyclopedia of Business, A Patriot and a dedicated servant to nationhood.
